Apple's Camera-Equipped AirPods Reportedly Delayed Until Late 2027
Apple is reportedly developing next-generation AirPods with built-in cameras designed to power AI features through Siri, but the launch has been pushed back to late 2027.
Apple's next major innovation for the AirPods lineup could introduce built-in cameras for the first time, according to recent reports. Rather than capturing photos or videos, the cameras are expected to enhance Siri's artificial intelligence capabilities by providing real-time information about the user's surroundings.
According to 9to5Mac, the next-generation earbuds were initially expected to debut in 2026, but their launch has reportedly been delayed until late 2027 due to setbacks in Apple's AI and Siri development roadmap.
AI Cameras Designed for Environmental Awareness
The integrated cameras are intended to work alongside Siri to interpret the environment and respond to contextual requests.
For example, users could point the earbuds toward food ingredients and ask Siri for dinner recommendations or nutritional information. The system is also expected to integrate with iPhone apps such as Reminders and Apple Maps, enabling more intelligent, context-aware interactions.
Redesigned Hardware
To accommodate the new camera hardware, the earbuds are rumored to feature longer stems than the current AirPods Pro design.
Reports also suggest the earbuds will include a small LED indicator that automatically lights up whenever the cameras are actively collecting visual data, providing users with a clear privacy indicator.
Apple's Current AirPods Lineup
Apple refreshed the AirPods Max earlier this year, introducing the H2 chip, an upgraded high-dynamic-range audio driver, improved sound quality, and additional enhancements.
The company also launched AirPods 4 in two versions in November 2024. At present, there are no credible reports indicating an update for Apple's entry-level AirPods.
Meanwhile, AirPods Pro 3, released last fall, introduced an improved in-ear design, enhanced audio quality, and a built-in heart rate monitor.
Premium Positioning Still Unclear
It remains uncertain where the camera-equipped earbuds will fit within Apple's product lineup.
The new model could arrive as the AirPods Pro 4, or Apple may introduce it as a completely new premium offering under a different name, such as AirPods Ultra, positioning it as the company's most advanced AI-powered wearable audio device to date.
