After millions of Android users in Egypt received an alert seconds before the recent earthquake, many iPhone owners were left wondering why no similar notification appeared on their devices. The answer is yes—an iPhone can provide earthquake alerts, but not in the same way as Android.

While Android relies on Google's Android Earthquake Alerts system, which uses millions of smartphones to detect seismic activity in real time, Apple's approach primarily depends on official government emergency alert systems. The company has also begun rolling out its Enhanced Safety Alerts feature in selected markets, including the United States and Taiwan, but the service is not currently available in Egypt.

Check Your Emergency Alert Settings

If you use an iPhone, it's worth ensuring that emergency alerts are enabled so you can receive official notifications if the feature becomes available in your country.

To check your settings:

Open Settings
Tap Notifications
Scroll to the bottom of the page
Enable Government Alerts or Emergency Alerts if those options appear on your device

Keep in mind that enabling these settings does not guarantee earthquake notifications in Egypt, as alerts depend on support from local authorities, mobile carriers, and Apple.

Use Dedicated Earthquake Alert Apps

Since iPhones in Egypt do not currently offer a built-in earthquake early warning system, users can rely on third-party applications that monitor seismic activity and send notifications.

Some of the most widely used options include:

Earthquake – Provides real-time notifications using official data from organizations such as the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Users can customize alerts based on their location or earthquake magnitude.
EarthquakeHelper – Delivers earthquake notifications using USGS data while also providing safety guidance on what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

Enable Notifications for the Apps

Installing an app alone is not enough.

To receive alerts, make sure notifications are enabled:

Settings → Notifications → [App Name] → Allow Notifications

Without notification permission, the app may detect an earthquake but will not be able to alert you.

Follow Official Seismic Monitoring Sources

For verified information immediately after an earthquake, experts recommend following official organizations, including:

Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG)
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC)

These organizations publish accurate information about an earthquake's magnitude, depth, location, and timing within minutes of detection.

Why Did Android Users Receive Alerts but iPhone Users Didn't?

Google's Android system works differently from Apple's approach.

Android devices use their built-in accelerometers as motion sensors. When large numbers of phones detect the same seismic vibrations simultaneously, anonymous motion data is sent to Google's servers. The company analyzes the information almost instantly and sends alerts to users located in areas expected to experience stronger shaking.

Apple, however, does not currently operate a global crowdsourced earthquake detection network. Instead, iPhones depend on official government emergency warning systems or Apple's Enhanced Safety Alerts, which remain available only in a limited number of countries.

As a result, most iPhone users in Egypt did not receive an earthquake notification before the recent tremor.
