WhatsApp has introduced a new security feature that allows users to protect WhatsApp Web with a dedicated password, helping prevent unauthorized access to private conversations when using shared or unattended computers.

The feature, developed by Meta Platforms, eliminates the need to install third-party browser extensions or log out of WhatsApp Web every time you leave your computer. Instead, users can lock the web application itself with a password that must be entered before chats become accessible.

Unlike Chat Lock or App Lock on smartphones, the WhatsApp Web password lock works independently, allowing users to secure their desktop sessions without affecting the mobile app.

Requirements Before Enabling WhatsApp Web Lock

Before activating the feature, make sure you have:

An active WhatsApp account on your smartphone.
Your account already linked to WhatsApp Web.
Access to WhatsApp Web through a supported browser on Windows or macOS.
The latest version of WhatsApp Web, as older versions may not include the App Lock option.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp Web

Open your preferred web browser and visit:

web.whatsapp.com

If you are not already logged in:

Open WhatsApp on your phone.
Go to Linked Devices.
Tap Link a Device.
Scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen.

Your chats will then sync to the desktop.

Step 2: Open Account Settings

After signing in:

Click your profile picture in the lower-left corner.
Open the Settings menu.

Step 3: Go to Privacy Settings

Inside Settings:

Select Privacy.
Scroll until you find the security options.

Step 4: Select "App Lock"

Within the Privacy menu:

Click App Lock.

If the option is unavailable, the feature may not have reached your account yet or you may need to update WhatsApp Web.

Step 5: Enable App Lock

Turn on App Lock.

WhatsApp will immediately prompt you to create a password.

Step 6: Create a Strong Password

Choose a password between 6 and 128 characters.

For stronger protection, use a combination of:

Uppercase and lowercase letters.
Numbers.
Special characters such as:
- @
- $
- %

Avoid predictable passwords like:

123456
password
Your birthday
Your name

Confirm the password and click OK.

Step 7: Test the Lock

After setup, WhatsApp offers two options:

Done — Saves your settings and continues normal use.
Lock Now — Immediately locks WhatsApp Web and prompts you to enter your password to verify it works correctly.

Step 8: Configure Automatic Lock

You can choose how quickly WhatsApp Web locks after inactivity.

Available options include:

1 minute
15 minutes (default)
1 hour
8 hours

Shorter lock times provide greater protection, especially on shared or workplace computers.

How to Lock WhatsApp Web Manually

You don't have to wait for the automatic timer.

To lock WhatsApp instantly:

Click the three-dot menu at the top of WhatsApp Web.
Select Lock App.

The application will immediately require your password before anyone can access your conversations.

What Happens After the App Is Locked?

When someone attempts to open WhatsApp Web after it has been locked:

Chats remain hidden.
Contacts are not displayed.
New messages cannot be viewed.

Instead, a password prompt appears. Entering the correct password restores full access.

Does WhatsApp Web Lock Affect the Mobile App?

No.

The WhatsApp Web password lock is completely independent of the mobile application.

This means you can:

Keep WhatsApp unlocked on your smartphone.
Protect WhatsApp Web with a separate password.
Continue using Face ID or fingerprint authentication on your phone while using a different password on your computer.

A Simple but Powerful Privacy Upgrade

The new WhatsApp Web App Lock feature provides an easy and effective way to safeguard private conversations without relying on browser extensions or repeatedly logging out. Combined with automatic locking and manual lock controls, it offers significantly stronger privacy for users accessing WhatsApp from shared, public, or workplace computers.
