Meta announced earlier this week that WhatsApp will introduce usernames, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. The feature is designed to enhance privacy by replacing phone numbers with unique usernames when interacting with others.

Although usernames have not yet been rolled out globally, Meta has begun allowing users to reserve their preferred usernames ahead of the wider launch, which is expected in the coming months.

If you'd like to secure the same username you use across your social media accounts, it's worth reserving it as soon as it becomes available.

How to Reserve a WhatsApp Username

At the moment, username reservation is only available through the WhatsApp mobile app.

If your app is up to date, you may receive a notification when the feature becomes available. Alternatively, you can check manually.

For iPhone

Tap You
Open your Profile
Select Create Username or Reserve Username (depending on the rollout stage)
Tap Save, then Done

For Android

Tap the three-dot menu
Select Settings
Open your Profile
Choose Create Username or Reserve Username
Tap Save, then Done

WhatsApp Username Rules

Like other social platforms, every WhatsApp username must be unique. If your preferred username has already been taken, you'll need to choose another one.

A previously reserved username only becomes available again if its owner changes or deletes it. According to Meta, released usernames will return to the available pool 14 days after they are removed.

Users may also have the option to use the same username associated with their Facebook or Instagram accounts, provided it hasn't already been claimed. However, those seeking greater privacy may prefer choosing a completely different username.

Usernames must:

Be between 3 and 35 characters long.
Include lowercase letters, numbers, underscores (_), and periods (.).
Not consist entirely of numbers.
Not contain prohibited words or phrases.

Be Cautious of Scams

Meta says it is implementing safeguards to help users identify messages from people they know, including verification mechanisms for first-time conversations initiated through usernames.

However, security experts warn that usernames could also make impersonation scams more convincing. While Meta will prevent users from claiming the identities of well-known public figures, the company has not fully explained how it will detect and prevent lookalike accounts.

Users are advised to remain cautious when receiving unexpected messages, especially those requesting money or sensitive information.

India Raises Concerns Over the Feature

Meta is already facing regulatory scrutiny in India, where authorities have reportedly asked the company to delay the feature's rollout until it provides more information about how it plans to reduce fraud risks.

India is WhatsApp's largest market, with more than 500 million users, making the country's response particularly significant for the global rollout.
