OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5.6, the latest generation of its artificial intelligence models, as the company looks to strengthen its position amid intensifying competition in the AI industry. The new family includes three models designed to serve different user needs, ranging from enterprise-grade applications to cost-effective solutions for everyday tasks.

Three Models for Different Use Cases

The GPT-5.6 lineup consists of Sol, Terra, and Luna.

Sol is the flagship and most advanced model in the family, while Terra offers a balance between performance and cost. Luna is positioned as the most affordable option for users seeking lower operating costs.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the new models deliver significantly higher efficiency than previous generations. According to the company, Sol reduces token consumption by 54% during coding tasks, enabling faster performance while lowering operational costs.

Advanced Coding and Cybersecurity Capabilities

OpenAI described GPT-5.6 as its most capable cybersecurity model to date. The model is designed to support tasks such as threat analysis, code review, vulnerability detection, and simulated cyberattack scenarios, helping organizations strengthen their digital security.

The company also introduced ChatGPT Work, a new platform designed for business users. Available on the web, desktop, and mobile devices, the service helps teams create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and complete other day-to-day workplace tasks.

Competing Directly with Anthropic

The launch comes as competition in the AI sector continues to intensify, particularly with Anthropic, which has recently expanded its focus on enterprise AI solutions.

Citing the results of an AI coding agent benchmark, OpenAI said Sol outperformed Anthropic's latest models while using less than half the number of tokens, completing tasks more quickly, and reducing costs by roughly one-third.

The company added that Terra also outperformed Fable 5, while Luna delivered stronger performance than Opus 4.8 within its pricing category.

Availability and Pricing

OpenAI said the GPT-5.6 family is now available through ChatGPT, Codex, and its API.

Pricing starts at $1 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for Luna. Terra is priced at $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, while Sol costs $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, giving developers and businesses a range of options based on their performance requirements and budgets.
