The Most Widely Used Social Media Platforms Worldwide in 2026
Social media platforms continue to reach unprecedented scale, with several services attracting billions of monthly users. Facebook remains the world's largest platform, while Meta strengthens its grip through Instagram and WhatsApp.
The world’s largest social media platforms now rival entire nations in scale, serving billions of users every month. According to 2026 data from Salesforce, highlighted by Visual Capitalist, Facebook remains the largest social network globally, with more than 3.1 billion monthly active users—equivalent to roughly 40% of the world’s population.
Meta continues to dominate the social media landscape through its ownership of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Both Instagram and WhatsApp have reached approximately 3 billion monthly active users, underscoring the company’s extensive global reach. Meta acquired Instagram in 2012 for $1 billion and purchased WhatsApp two years later in a deal valued at nearly $20 billion.
YouTube ranked fourth with around 2.5 billion monthly active users, followed by TikTok with 2 billion. China’s WeChat secured sixth place with 1.4 billion users.
The top 15 list also includes Facebook Messenger and Telegram, each with 1 billion users, alongside Snapchat with 900 million, Reddit with 850 million, Douyin, X (formerly Twitter), Pinterest, Threads, and LinkedIn.
