On July 4, 2026, the United States celebrated the 250th anniversary of its founding by burying a stainless steel time capsule in Philadelphia. Weighing approximately 408 kilograms (900 pounds), the capsule contains artifacts representing life in America in 2026 and is scheduled to be opened 250 years later, in 2276.

Among its most notable contents is an orange Cosmic iPhone 17 Pro Max, chosen to symbolize the role smartphones play in modern life.

A Snapshot of Life in 2026

The time capsule includes contributions from all 50 U.S. states as well as the country's five territories, offering future generations a snapshot of everyday life in 2026.

Organizers believe the iPhone 17 Pro Max is one of the most significant items inside the capsule, reflecting the central role smartphones have come to play in communication, work, entertainment, and daily routines.

Will the iPhone Still Work in 2276?

According to the organizers, the iPhone stored inside the capsule contains digital content saved in the Notes app, intended to give future generations a glimpse into everyday life in 2026.

However, it is considered highly unlikely that people in 2276 will be able to power on the device.

The iPhone relies on a lithium-ion battery, which naturally degrades over time. After 250 years, the battery would almost certainly be unusable, making it doubtful that the phone could function when the United States celebrates its 500th anniversary.

If future generations somehow succeed in restoring the device, they could potentially access its photos, notes, and other digital files, comparing 21st-century technology with whatever technologies exist in 2276.

Looking 250 Years Into the Future

While it is impossible to predict how people centuries from now will react to seeing today's smartphones, organizers acknowledge that technological progress is likely to be dramatic.

For perspective, 250 years ago, when the United States was founded, the world was only beginning to adopt steam engines, while technologies such as the telegraph would not appear for several more decades.

Claude AI Imagines California in 2276

One of the capsule's more futuristic contributions comes from California, which included an AI-generated prediction created by Claude, the chatbot developed by Anthropic.

Prompted to describe California 250 years after July 4, 2026, Claude imagined a future in which:

Highways have disappeared.
Grizzly bears have returned.
California has joined Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia in a fictional "Pacific Federation."

Whether any of these predictions become reality remains to be seen.

Other Historic Artifacts

The time capsule also includes several historically significant items.

Arizona used nano-engraving technology to inscribe the full text of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution onto a stainless steel coin.

Meanwhile, New Hampshire contributed a booklet documenting key events from the American Revolutionary War.

Built to Last Centuries

The capsule itself is constructed from stainless steel and designed in a cylindrical shape, a structure chosen for greater durability and resistance to cracking compared with traditional box-shaped capsules.

It is enclosed within a secondary protective cylinder that seals out air and water, helping preserve its contents for centuries.

To ensure it can be located in the future, officials have recorded its location in the National Park Service's succession plans and will install a permanent cornerstone at the burial site.
