Meta has unveiled a new free gray verification badge for personal Facebook accounts, introducing a new way for users to confirm their identity and demonstrate that they are real people. The initiative comes as AI-generated content and fake profiles become increasingly sophisticated, making identity verification more important across the platform.

The new Facebook Verified badge is designed to improve trust in areas where users frequently interact with strangers, including Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Dating, and Facebook Groups.

How the Gray Facebook Verified Badge Works

The verification process is based on a short selfie video captured by the user. Facebook's verification system compares the video with existing profile photos to confirm the user's identity.

According to Meta, the process is completely free and typically takes only a few minutes to complete. However, users must meet the platform's security and authenticity standards before receiving the badge.

Who Is Eligible?

Meta said the gray verification badge is currently available to users who:

Are 18 years of age or older
Have a personal Facebook account
Comply with Facebook's Community Standards, particularly policies related to fraud, scams, and deceptive behavior
Show no signs of fake identity or inauthentic account activity

At launch, the badge is not available for Facebook Pages or accounts using Professional Mode.

Where the Badge Will Appear

Once verified, the gray badge will be displayed in several key areas where identity matters most, including:

Facebook Marketplace
Facebook Dating
Facebook Groups
User profiles

Meta also confirmed that it plans to expand the badge to posts appearing in the Facebook News Feed in a future update.

No Subscription Required

Unlike Meta Verified, the new gray badge is entirely free. Users only need to complete the verification process once, after which the badge remains attached to their account across supported Facebook services.

What the Badge Means

The gray Facebook Verified badge indicates that the account belongs to a real person who has successfully completed Meta's selfie verification process and complies with the company's authenticity and safety standards.

The badge is intended to help users make more informed decisions before responding to Marketplace listings, interacting with people through Facebook Dating, or engaging with members in Facebook Groups.

However, Meta emphasized that the badge does not serve as an endorsement of a user's credibility or guarantee their trustworthiness. All verified accounts remain subject to Facebook's Community Standards and Commerce Policies.

Addressing the Rise of AI-Generated Accounts

Meta said the initiative reflects the growing need for stronger identity verification as artificial intelligence makes it easier to create convincing fake accounts and synthetic content. By introducing a simple and free verification process, the company aims to provide users with a clearer way to distinguish authentic individuals from potentially fraudulent profiles.
