If you've recently shopped for a new laptop, you may have noticed that some models no longer include an HDMI port—a long-standing standard for connecting laptops to external monitors, TVs, and projectors.

While HDMI remains available on many devices, an increasing number of manufacturers are replacing it with USB-C, reflecting a broader shift toward more versatile connectivity and slimmer laptop designs.

Why Manufacturers Prefer USB-C

Unlike traditional HDMI ports, USB-C is a multifunctional connector capable of handling several tasks through a single port.

Depending on the laptop's specifications, a USB-C port can:

Transfer data
Output video and audio to external displays
Charge the laptop
Connect to a wide range of accessories

By consolidating multiple functions into one connector, manufacturers can reduce the number of physical ports, simplify device design, and produce thinner, lighter laptops.

This approach has become especially common in ultraportable and premium notebook models.

HDMI Isn't Disappearing Completely

Despite the growing adoption of USB-C, HDMI remains an important feature on many modern laptops.

In fact, numerous models continue to include both HDMI and USB-C, giving users greater flexibility when connecting external displays and peripherals without requiring additional accessories.

The Downsides of Removing HDMI

Eliminating the HDMI port does come with compromises.

Users who need to connect to monitors, televisions, or projectors with HDMI inputs often have to purchase:

A USB-C to HDMI adapter
A USB-C hub
A docking station

These accessories add extra cost and require users to carry additional equipment, particularly those who frequently work with multiple displays or external devices.

What Is Thunderbolt?

Some laptops feature the Thunderbolt logo next to a USB-C port.

Although Thunderbolt uses the same physical connector as USB-C, it offers significantly more advanced capabilities.

Modern versions, including Thunderbolt 3 and later, support:

Much faster data transfer speeds
Multiple external displays
High-performance docking stations
Expanded connectivity for professional workflows

These capabilities have made Thunderbolt a preferred solution for many premium laptop manufacturers.

Thinner Designs Come with Repair Challenges

The trend toward thinner laptops extends beyond removing ports.

Many manufacturers now solder components such as RAM and storage chips directly onto the motherboard instead of making them user-replaceable.

While this design helps reduce the size and weight of laptops, it also makes repairs and future hardware upgrades more difficult, limiting users' ability to expand memory or storage after purchase.

The Bottom Line

The move from HDMI to USB-C reflects the industry's focus on versatility, portability, and minimalist design. For many users, USB-C offers a more flexible and future-ready solution by combining charging, data transfer, and display output into a single connector.

However, those who frequently rely on HDMI-compatible displays may need additional adapters or docking stations, making it important to consider connectivity needs before choosing a new laptop.
