YouTube to End Support for Millions of Older Android Phones: Here's What You Need to Know
Google is ending YouTube support for older Android devices by raising minimum Android requirements, leaving millions of phones without future updates and security fixes.
Google has begun phasing out support for the YouTube app on older Android smartphones as part of its strategy to focus on newer versions of the operating system. The move will affect millions of aging devices worldwide, which will gradually lose access to future app updates and new features.
YouTube Raises Minimum Android Requirement
Under Google's latest compatibility changes, future versions of the YouTube app will require Android 10 or later.
Devices running Android 9 Pie will continue to use the current version of the app, but they will no longer receive feature updates, bug fixes, or security patches. Over time, this could result in missing functionality and eventually prevent the app from working as Google's services continue to evolve.
Google has also updated the minimum Android requirements for several of its other apps:
Google app: Android 11 or later
YouTube: Android 10 or later
Gmail: Android 7 Nougat or later
As a result, devices still running Android 6 Marshmallow will no longer receive Gmail updates.
Why Google Is Dropping Support for Older Phones
Modern Google applications rely on newer Android technologies and APIs that support features such as biometric authentication, stronger privacy protections, improved security, and enhanced connectivity.
Maintaining compatibility with outdated operating systems also increases development complexity and limits the introduction of new features. By raising minimum system requirements, Google can streamline development while improving performance, reliability, and security across its apps.
What Happens If Your Phone Stops Receiving Updates?
The affected apps will not stop working immediately.
However, users with unsupported devices will no longer receive:
New features and functionality
Bug fixes
Security updates
Performance improvements
As Google continues updating its cloud infrastructure and services, certain features may gradually stop functioning, including video playback, email synchronization, voice search, or other connected services. Eventually, some apps may become unusable.
How to Check Whether Your Phone Is Affected
If your smartphone is running Android 10 or newer, you will continue receiving future YouTube updates without interruption.
If your device runs Android 9 Pie or an earlier version, YouTube will continue working temporarily, but support will gradually end as future app versions become incompatible.
To check your Android version:
Open Settings.
Tap About Phone.
Select Android Version.
Do You Need to Buy a New Phone?
Not necessarily.
If your manufacturer still provides official Android updates, you may be able to upgrade your device to a newer version of the operating system, allowing continued access to the latest Google apps.
However, devices that have reached the end of their software support lifecycle will eventually lose compatibility with newer Google applications. In those cases, upgrading to a newer smartphone may become the only way to continue using YouTube and other Google services with their latest features and security protections.
