One of the biggest barriers to wider EV adoption has been concerns over battery degradation, but new research suggests AI could provide a solution.
According to a report by EV Magazine, researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have developed an AI-driven charging approach capable of extending EV battery life by as much as 23%.
The system continuously analyzes battery conditions in real time and adjusts charging and discharging rates to reduce thermal and chemical stress on battery cells. Unlike conventional charging methods, the adaptive technology responds dynamically to changing conditions, helping preserve battery capacity for longer periods.
Beyond its technical advantages, the breakthrough could deliver significant economic and environmental benefits. Longer-lasting batteries can reduce the total cost of EV ownership by delaying costly replacements, while also cutting electronic waste generated by discarded battery packs.
The innovation could further ease pressure on global supply chains for critical minerals used in battery production, marking another step toward a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future.
